This is an awesome script. Very detailed. Very good but then this is Kevin Smith who would expect anything less???? I mean he is a legend for good reason. The movie is great. Jason Lee yet again just pure brilliance. and to the comment above mine by Rhian - because no Kevin Smith film ever looks exactly like the same way on the screen then it does on the page - see Mallrats and Clerks as good examples

I am an admirer of Alan Rickman myself, and I find this script very excellent!

It's a must see. The acting was phenomenal! I give huge props to Alan Rickman, Jason Lee, Kevin Smith (acting wise, as well) and Chris Rock. Not to mention the script! Kevin Smith pulled it off gracefully, keeping the film from just mindlessly bashing all religion.

Grant (10 out of 10 )
I feel as though I learned a lot from this movie.

The Plasma Snake (8 out of 10 )
Where's the rest?! The script stops short of the end. What a jip. Otherwise it was pretty good. Some of the dialougue got cheesy but the good far outweighed the bad.

This film is quality, I think Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back is better though. I love all the films made by Kevin Smith, he kicks ass.

Evan (10 out of 10 )
It's funny and it makes you think. I mean, how cool is that?

Having liked Clerks, Mallrats and Chasing Amy, Dogma was a real letdown. The film mascarades as a cutting satire of religion, but really it's tame stuff. The jokes are so lame and inoffensive (a forgotten disciple was a black man- oh how daring!) that only the most demented fundamentalist could possibly find anything to object to. This is especially disappointing given the willfully offensive, take no prisoners humour that Kevin Smith displayed in his earlier films. Anyone looking for a really funny, spot on satire of religion should watch Life of Brian instead. Dogma is just a bit of kid gloves lampooning that may raise a smile or two among the faithful, snug in the certainty of their belief, but will leave anyone who seriously questions the absurdities of religion singularly unimpressed.

This is more of a response to Alan's Comment more than anything. Watch the DVD A night with kevin Smith and you'll realize why some of the stuff seams tame I mean the church is worse than the mob.

Alan, Alan, Alan. Why does it have to offend you in order to have merit. I realise it's very cool these days to bash religion without pulling punches, but here is a good example, no an excellent example of a film that makes its point without having to go to the extreme. It's smart, funny, very well done on all fronts. I agree with you about Life of Brian - it is spot on, but I can and have sat through all of Dogma every time. I don't even remember the last time I was able to sit through all of LOB. It's best skipping to the best parts.

This movie is funny as heck and it's not suppose to bash religion its just to make people question it. I am a firm believer in questioning pretty much everything. But anyway I love Alan Rickman and Kevin Smith has a real talent with directing and writing.

I don't even know if after 11 years this blog is still open, however I love the opportunity of hailing Dogma as one of the best comedy ever! I's pure laugh from beginning to end (the disclaimer about the platypus is hilarious), but nevertheless it makes you really see how the spirituality at the root of Christianity has been tarnished and suffocated by centuries of hypocritical buildup. Well done Mr. Smith, keep going and let those Bible-thumpers scream as much they like: our laughthers are louder and last much longer.

Responding to Alan's post: You realise Smith is a born and raised Catholic, right? He's not coming at it from the perspective of someone bashing religion for insult and injury, he's approaching it from the angle of a believer. Someone who is unwilling to turn his back on or attack his faith, but still wants to raise some questions about the things that don't seem right to him. And hell, he made a spectacular film in the process.

I know this film inside-out after watching the DVD countless times. Tragically it has been re-cut between this script an the version I have, I've come across several exchanges which have been shortened on the DVD. I might have to read the whole thing here to get the full hit! The strength of Smith is his dialogue, so the sparkle is still there as I read it. It is an astounding film and a real test of faith for anyone who is religious, especially Catholic. If someone can see the humour when their faith is poked and mocked in this intelligent way, then they have real faith. The ones who get angry are insecure. I once watched it with a theology student who pointed out all sorts of nuances I didn't know were there. It's a shame that Alan doesn't get it. It IS cutting edge satire. You don't have to insult and offend to satirise, in fact, if you do insult and offend then the thrust of the satire is lost. I am sad that someone's enjoyment of a film is based on the vicarious pleasure they get imagining how angry and hurt it makes other people.

Hey, the script is missing the final scene or two! I came here looking for Silent Bob lines (I know he says "no ticket", but I swear he says another word at the end).
